Expatriate Labour 

A  large number of expatriate population live and work in the country. According to the 1990 census 17,000 expatriates from more than 25 countries work in the country . Of those 52% were from Sri-Lanka, 15% from Bangladesh, and 12% from India. [Data source Statistical Yearbook of Maldives 1995]. 

There are no set wages in the rpivate sector. However, once again the public sector has a fairly standardised salary scale which is used as a guideline by the private sector. 

Labour strikes and other work disruptions are non existent in the Maldives.
