The country has a very young and literate population with a high rate of school enrolment. Public education is free and private schools charge nominal fees. The education system is based on English medium. The highest level of formal education available in the country is the London G.C.E Advance Level. As there are no universities, tertiary education is undertaken overseas. However, there are institutions for non-formal and technical education.
Vocational training is provided by the Vocational Training Centre (soon to be upgraded to the Maldives Institute for Technical Education) the Institute of Hotel and Catering Services train employees to work in the tourism sector, and the Maldives Centre for Management and Administration train people in management.
The number of qualified and competently trained people joining the workforce is increasing every year. High literacy also means that the workforce is easily trainable in technology oriented fields.
